Our framework

The Priest, the Prophet, and the Wise Man

How three Old Testament offices work together for covenant faithfulness—and how 99th Magi orients its service to that pattern.

The Old Testament presents a differentiated yet integrated leadership structure in Israel’s covenant life. Jeremiah 18:18 sets out a programmatic triad: the priest as custodian of Torah, the wise man as mediator of counsel, and the prophet as bearer of the revealed word.

That order assumes a theology of cooperative offices: each derives authority from Yahweh yet works in a distinct sphere—instruction, revelation, and application—so the people flourish in holiness, justice, and peace.

The law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet.

Jeremiah 18:18

The wise man

חָכָם (ḥākām); counsel עֵצָה (ʿēṣâ)

Royal discernment and covenant prudence

In Jeremiah 18:18, counsel is attributed to the wise. That counsel often carries strategic and administrative weight—wisdom that steadies governance. Biblical wisdom is never mere cleverness; it is moral discernment rooted in the fear of the Lord (Prov. 1:7).

Ecclesiastes 8:1, 5 highlights the wise: wisdom makes one’s face shine, and those who keep a command will know no evil—linking wisdom to knowing “time and judgment,” a sense of fittingness in rulership and decision.

In Israel’s life the wise mediate horizontally: they help translate covenant truth into daily order, judicial process, and stable society. Without wisdom, prophetic revelation can be mishandled and priestly law can lose humane application.

The prophet

דָּבָר (dābār) — the word

Revelation, correction, covenant alignment

Jeremiah distinguishes the prophet by the “word”—dynamic divine speech. The prophet does not invent policy but declares Yahweh’s authoritative will.

2 Chronicles 20:20 joins trust in God with trust in His prophets: “Believe in the LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper”—national life is tied to receptivity to revelation.

Prophetic ministry works vertically: it keeps the community aligned with covenant stipulations, calling God’s people back to Torah when they stray. Without prophecy, wisdom can shrink to pragmatism; without prophecy and priesthood, correction would lack both word and atonement.

The priest

כֹּהֵן (kōhēn); Torah תּוֹרָה (tôrâ)

Mediator of Torah and sacred presence

Torah is said not to “perish” from the priest (Jer. 18:18). Priests taught and guarded the Law (e.g. Lev. 10:11; Mal. 2:7)—instruction and liturgy bound together.

1 Chronicles 16:39 shows Zadok ministering before the tabernacle in fidelity to what is written. In Ezekiel 44:15 the sons of Zadok are honored for having “kept the charge” when others failed—they draw near to God because they were faithful.

Ezekiel 43:19 assigns sacrificial ministry, including sin offerings—atonement as the basis of restored worship. The priest safeguards holiness and communion: if wisdom orders society and prophecy enforces obedience, priestly mediation reconciles and preserves access to God’s presence.

How the three streams work together

  • Wisdom operationalizes divine order in daily life and governance.
  • Prophecy recalibrates the community to God’s revealed will.
  • Priesthood reconciles the people to God through instruction and atoning worship.

Wise manעֵצָה (ʿēṣâ) / חָכְמָה (ḥokmâ)Governance & prudenceSocial stability
Prophetדָּבָר (dābār)Revelation & correctionSpiritual alignment

Jeremiah’s triad is structural, not accidental: Torah, counsel, and word must remain active among God’s people. Their health depends on harmony—when wisdom, prophecy, and priesthood integrate under God’s sovereignty, the kingdom reflects security, stability, fidelity, and worship—as seen across passages from 2 Chronicles, Ecclesiastes, and Ezekiel.

99th Magi names the wise man in our calling because counsel, cosmic pattern, and life-direction belong together. Our team serves you with that threefold Scripture pattern in view: faithful instruction, clear witness to what is disclosed, and practical wisdom for your path.
